Climatehang.com is a classic hangman game with an environmental twist. Every time someone correctly guesses a word on this site, climatehang buys a renewable energy credit that causes a reduction of 1 oz. of carbon dioxide emissions from the U.S. electricity grid. These renewable energy credits are called carbon offsets. Carbon offsets are explained in detail on the "About Carbon Offsets" page, but the quick version is that they are a method of financing projects that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into our atmosphere. They can be applied to a variety of projects in energy production, energy efficiency and other areas.
Climatehang.com focuses its efforts on financing renewable energy through wind and solar energy projects.
Climatehang finances clean energy production through donations to the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Currently these donations only support wind energy projects that are certified by the Green-e® Climate Program. For detailed information on the specific wind and solar energy projects supported by the Bonneville Environmental Foundation click here.
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are gases in our atmosphere that cause a "greenhouse" effect. This means they trap some of the energy of sunlight in the Earth's atmosphere, which causes the planet to warm. This is a natural effect, but it has recently become apparent that human actions are strengthening the power of the warming effect.
Industrial activities and other human actions are causing measurable increases in the amounts of certain greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is responsible for the increased warming.
When people talk about greenhouse gases, they are generally referring to the greenhouse gases that humans are releasing into the atmosphere. More detailed information about greenhouse gases and how they affect the climate can be found on the "About Climate Change" page.
Why are greenhouse gases and global warming a problem?
Global warming has a wide range of effects on the environment and human society. Warming temperatures can cause water scarcity issues, more extreme weather, loss of coastal land, increased species extinction, various changes in crop yields, higher mortality rates from disease, etc. More detailed information about the consequences of climate change can be found on the "Climate Change Effects" page.
